Liverpool are reportedly set to rival Manchester United for the signature of goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, who currently plays for MLS side New England Revolution.

After making 86 competitive appearances for Serbian outfit Cukaricki, Petrovic completed a move to the United States in April 2022.

Petrovic initially began his time with New England on the bench, but after making his debut for the franchise in June last year, he has gone on to establish himself as the club's number-one goalkeeper, making 25 appearances across all competitions.

The Serbian has made an impressive start to the 2023 season, keeping clean sheets in New England's opening two games - a 1-0 win over Charlotte and a 3-0 victory against Houston Dynamo.

A recent report claimed that Petrovic was being scouted by Man United, who are looking to strengthen their goalkeeping department in the summer.

Man United's current number one David de Gea is out of contract at the end of the season, and the Red Devils are reportedly still yet to make a decision on his future.

Even if the Spaniard remains at Old Trafford, Tom Heaton's current deal only runs until June, while Jack Butland is set to return to Crystal Palace when his loan deal ends.

Dean Henderson, who is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, is also expected to leave Man United in the summer transfer window.

Should Man United decide to move for Petrovic, they could face competition from one of their Premier League rivals.

According to The Mirror, Liverpool are also interested in signing the New England stopper, as they look to resolve their own goalkeeping issues.

Although Alisson Becker is Jurgen Klopp's undisputed number one, the Reds may need to sign a backup for the Brazil international, due to the uncertainty surrounding the futures of Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrian.

Kelleher has been linked with a move away as he looks to increase his playing time, while Adrian could depart the Merseyside club when his contract expires in June.

Petrovic, who has made two international appearances for Serbia, is under contract until June 2025, and New England have the option of extending that deal by an additional 12 months.

While Liverpool and the Red Devils could be set to go head-to-head in the transfer market, Klopp's side prevailed in the battle on the pitch, thrashing Man United 7-0 in Sunday's Premier League contest.

All seven goals arrived after the 43rd minute, as Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah all recorded braces, before Roberto Firmino found the net to round off a memorable victory. body check tags ::
