Jonjo Shelvey has defended Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce, labelling criticism of the former Manchester United defender 'embarrassing'.

The 58-year-old's appointment at St James' Park was met with some consternation during the summer but the club have taken four points from their last two Premier League games.

In recent weeks there had been suggestions of leaks from the Newcastle dressing room, with former striker Michael Chopra suggesting that players were unaware of their roles under Bruce.

Speaking to the Newcastle Chronicle, former Liverpool midfielder Shelvey said of the supposed leaks: "It's just people who are bored. If they saw you - or Steve Bruce - in the street they'd come up to you and try to talk.

"It's just embarrassing. People can talk but we need to stick together and keep it all in house.

"We have to do our media duties and that but you can see in recent performances that we are together."

The midfielder also defended Bruce's abilities as a coach, describing him as one of the "best man-managers" he has ever worked with.

Newcastle return to Premier League action on Saturday with a trip to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, who have won their last 13 in the top flight.
