The Spaniard left the City Ground on Friday morning.

Nottingham Forest are looking for a new manager after parting company with Aitor Karanka.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at some of the contenders.

Slavisa Jokanovic

Slavisa Jokanovic is looking for work following his departure from Fulham (Martin Rickett/PA)

Former Fulham and Watford manager Jokanovic is the bookmakers' favourite to succeed Karanka. The Serbian led both the Hornets and the Cottagers to promotion but was sacked by Fulham in November.

Gary Rowett

Sacked by Stoke this week, but Rowett enjoyed success with both Burton and Birmingham before guiding Forest's rivals Derby to the Sky Bet Championship play-offs last season.

Martin O'Neill

As a midfielder, Martin O'Neill won the old First Division with Nottingham Forest in 1978 (PA Archive)

A European Cup winner as a player with Forest, the former Leicester, Celtic, Sunderland and Republic of Ireland boss could be a popular choice to return to the City Ground as manager.

Roy Keane

Roy Keane managed against Nottingham Forest during his time as Ipswich boss (PA Archive)

Began his career as a combative midfielder with Forest before enjoying huge success with Manchester United. A mixed CV as a manager, however, and controversy is never far away.

David Moyes

David Moyes left West Ham last summer (Daniel Hambury/PA)

Still to get back into management after keeping West Ham up last season, the former Everton and Manchester United boss would be a safe pair of hands.
