Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe could be offered a player-coach role at Rangers if he were to sign a permanent deal with the Scottish club, according to a report.

The 37-year-old joined Steven Gerrard's side on an 18-month loan in January and he has since scored 20 goals in 34 appearances, including 12 in 14 games this season.

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker is reportedly keen on a permanent deal, and the Rangers boss suggested to the Daily Record that Defoe could be offered a contract that would see him combine coaching with playing.

Gerrard said: "Jermain will know certain situations in the game, certain things to look out for in that specific position – better than any coach in the world.

"He has a catalogue of knowledge that he can pass on.

"Whether that ends up being on our staff or elsewhere, I'd love to see him give something back to the game. But he still has so much to offer as a player."

Rangers, who are currently two points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, return to action next Sunday against Craig Levein's Hearts.
