Rochdale beat Coventry City in a penalty shootout to reach round two of the League Cup.

Rochdale are into the second round of the Capital One Cup after beating League One rivals Coventry City in a penalty shootout.

Dale started on the front foot, with Ian Henderson seeing his close-range shot blocked before Oliver Lancashire headed wide of Reice Charles-Cook's goal.

Josh Lillis was called into action midway through the first half, saving efforts from Marcus Tudgay and Sam Ricketts as Coventry looked to gain a foothold in the game.

However, they fell behind seconds before the interval as Donal McDermott unleashed a shot from distance, which Charles-Cook was unable to reach.

John Fleck tried to drag the Sky Blues level after the restart, firing one shot wide before seeing another strike saved by Lillis.

McDermott almost put Rochdale out of reach with a curling free kick, which was inches away from finding the top corner.

However, Coventry managed to equalise with six minutes left as Tudgay diverted Chris Stokes's cross past Lillis.

Tony Mowbray's men almost snatched victory in the dying moments of normal time, but James Maddison was denied by the Dale keeper.

The East Midlands outfit continued to forge chances in the first period of extra time, with Stokes, Tudgay and Ruben Lameiras all going close to netting a second goal for the visitors.

However, Rochdale continued to pose their own attacking threat as both Jamie Allen and Henderson brought saves out of Charles-Cook.

Allen came close again with time running out as his shot from distance came back off the post, but neither side were unable to grab a winner before the game went to a penalty shootout.

After seven successful spot kicks, youngster Lameiras smashed his effort against the bar before Calvin Andrew sealed Dale's place in the next round.
