Southampton have reportedly decided to offer a new contract to Jay Rodriguez in an attempt to fight off interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
Rodriguez has not played this season due to a knee injury he picked up in the latter stages of the previous campaign, but that has apparently not stopped former Saints head coach Mauricio Pochettino from including the striker on a list of targets he will look to bring to North London in January.
However, Spurs could be left frustrated in their bid to sign the 25-year-old as Southampton are keen to take advantage of their recent success by securing his services for the foreseeable future.
According to The Mirror, Southampton are willing to hand Rodriguez a new five-year contract before he makes his comeback from injury.
Rodriguez scored 17 goals in all competitions under Pochettino last season.
