Lewis Hamilton becomes a four-time world champion following a dramatic Mexican Grand Prix, despite finishing down in ninth place.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has become Britain's most successful ever Formula 1 driver by winning a fourth world championship title in a dramatic Mexican Grand Prix.

The 32-year-old overtakes Sir Jackie Stewart with his latest triumph and is now level with Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel, while legendary driver Michael Schumacher is just three in front.

Hamilton was all smiles at the end of the race, despite finishing way down in ninth place following a clash with Vettel in the early stages.

A puncture was the resulting damage from that collision, with Vettel eventually climbing up to fourth place but not doing enough to finish in the top two, meaning a piece of history for Hamilton.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen came out on top in Mexico after producing a dominant display, finding himself in the lead from the first corner of the race when taking advantage of his rivals' coming together.

Hamilton, who fell narrowly short in 2007 and 2016 by finishing second, can celebrate a double success as Mercedes were crowned constructors' champions for a fourth-year running last weekend.

Elsewhere in the third-from-last race of the 2017 season, Mercedes's Valtteri Bottas claimed second ahead of Finnish compatriot Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari.

Mexican Grand Prix top 10:

1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
2. Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes)
3. Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari)
4. Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari)
5. Esteban Ocon (Force India)
6. Lance Stroll (Williams)
7. Sergio Perez (Force India)
8. Kevin Magnussen (Haas)
9. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
10. Fernando Alonso (McLaren)
