Phil Mickelson retains his lead at the halfway stage of The Open at Royal Troon, but is just one shot clear of Henrik Stenson.

Phil Mickelson has retained his lead at the halfway stage of The Open having shot a two-under-par 69 on day two at Royal Troon.

The veteran American shot a record-equalling 63 yesterday, and today set a new benchmark for the lowest score after 36 holes in an Open at Royal Troon, reaching the halfway point on 132 (10-under-par).

The 2013 Open champion is just one shot ahead of Henrik Stenson, though, after the Swede registered a six-under 65 to keep the pressure on.

Soren Kjeldsen and Keegan Bradley are two shots further back, while defending champion Zach Johnson shot a one-under 70 to keep himself just about in the running.

The weather played a major role on day two, though, with the fierce wind and rain ruining the chances of a number of high-profile players including Jason Day (+1), Justin Rose (+3), Jordan Spieth (+4) and Masters champion Danny Willett (+4).

Andrew Johnston recovered from a triple bogey at the 11th to finish two-under for the day and reach the halfway stage as the best-placed Englishman on four-under, while Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson both sit eight shots off the lead.
