Scottie Scheffler takes control at Masters, Tiger Woods makes cut

World number one Scottie Scheffler takes a five-shot lead at the Masters, while five-time champion Tiger Woods makes the cut at Augusta on his return to professional golf.

Scottie Scheffler has recorded a second-round 67 to establish a five-shot lead after the second round of the Masters on a day when Tiger Woods successfully made the cut.

Scheffler, who recently became the new world number one courtesy of three tournament wins in five appearances, hit seven birdies as he stormed clear of the rest of the field.

While the American will dominate much of the headlines, Woods will naturally receive a special mention after comfortably making it through to the weekend on one-over-par, his first outing since suffering two broken legs in a car crash in February 2021.

Having bogeyed four of his opening five holes, the returning five-time champion looked like facing a battle to make the cut, but four birdies on his closing 11 holes ensured that he enters the weekend in a tie for 19th position.

The 2021 winner Hideki Matsuyama is among four players to end Friday's play in a tie for second and lie five shots adrift, the other three being Charl Schwartzel, Im Sung-jae and Shane Lowry.

Dustin Johnson is in a share of sixth, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas are among those in 10th, and Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy are down in 23th position. body check tags ::
