The 29-year-old carded a round of 64 to finish the day on seven-under-par.
Fellow countryman Richard McEvoy is two shots behind, along with Paraguay's Fabrizio Zanotti. Spain's Sergio Garcia is on four-under with six others.
Elsewhere, Tom Lewis, who won the Portugal Masters last week, recovered from an illness to post a level-par 71, while Scotland's Colin Montgomerie is one-under par.
