Why you shouldn't bet on Tiger Woods to win US PGA Championship

Tiger Woods has just defied the odds to win the 2019 Masters, but do not expect the 15-time Major champion to back up that success at the US PGA Championship.

The dust has barely settled on Tiger Woods completing what is perceived to be one of the greatest sporting comebacks of all time to win the 2019 Masters, and it is already nearly time for the the second Major of the golfing calendar. The US PGA Championship has been moved from August to May, but it has come at the the right time with golf finding itself in the most spotlight for a number of years. This year's tournament is being played at Bethpage Black - a course which Woods has had plenty of success at throughout his career - but that should not necessarily mean that you should be jumping on the bandwagon as the American begins to consider moving closer to Jack Nicklaus's long-standing total of 18 majors.

The golf betting odds are going to tell you that Woods is almost certainly going to be a major contender at the New York course, but you have to take a step back and appreciate what frame of mind Woods is going to be in ahead of the tournament. The 43-year-old has already spoken about holding a desire to 'get back to work' after the furore of Augusta, but he has openly admitted that it was proving to be easier said than done. Woods had been due to participate in the PGA Tour event at Quail Hollow in preparation for the US PGA, but he instead opted to withdraw from the tournament rather than provide excited fans with a token appearance. It would suggest that Woods only wants to play if he feels he has a chance of winning at the end of the weekend, but it means that the Florida-based player will be well short of match practice when being paired with Brooks Koepka and Francesco Molinari for the opening round on May 16.

You must also take into consideration how many players went close at The Masters. Woods deserved his triumph, but he also benefitted from the mistakes being made by his nearest rivals. Koepka and Molinari put themselves out of the running with a wayward tee shot on the 12th, but the pair should both be in your thoughts ahead of this tournament. Koepka has finished in the top 13 in nine of his last 10 appearances at a Major - which is phenomenal - while Molinari is arguably the most improved high-profile player of the last 12 months and has recorded four top-10s in his last seven outings at a Major.

An outsider - if you can call him that - to keep an eye on is Patrick Reed. The American won last year's Masters, but he has failed to build on that success over the past 13 months. You have to go all the way back to June 2018 for his last top-10 in America, but there were signs at Quail Hollow that the 28-year-old is beginning to find some form ahead of a packed few months. Reed has also had previous success at Bethpage Black, so there is huge value in backing him at golf betting odds of 50/1.
