European captain Paul McGinley names Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Stephen Gallacher as his three wildcard picks for this month's Ryder Cup.

Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Stephen Gallacher have been named as Paul McGinley's European wildcard picks for the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles later this month.

The trio join the nine automatic qualifiers - Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Victor Dubuisson, Jamie Donaldson, Sergio Garcia, Thomas Bjorn, Justin Rose, Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell - for the biennial event, which takes place between September 26 and September 28.

Poulter, who also received a captain's pick in 2012, was the most assured of a pick after his passionate performances and impressive record at recent Ryder Cups.

The 38-year-old won all of his matches at Medinah two years ago and holds a record of 12 points from 15 matches in the contest against the USA.

He also showed McGinley that he is in decent form with a closing round of 66 yesterday at the Deutsche Bank Championship to finish in a tie for 23rd place.

Gallacher agonisingly missed out on edging McDowell out of the automatic qualifying on Sunday when he finished in third place at the Italian Open when needing a second-placed finish.

The 39-year-old lives just 35 miles from Gleneagles and has recorded seven top-10 finishes there in his last 12 appearances.

Westwood, meanwhile, beats out Luke Donald for the last place to make his ninth appearance at the Ryder Cup. Nick Faldo holds the record for most European appearances with 11.

Donald, who McGinley said was "very very disappointed" at hearing that he had missed out, has made four of the last five Ryder Cup teams, but is without a win on the PGA or European Tour since 2012.

McGinley also revealed today that Italy's Francesco Molinari was a "serious contender".

US captain Tom Watson will announce his three picks later today.
