Kate Howey: 'Alice Schlesinger should have progressed further'

GB Elite Performance coach Kate Howey believes that Alice Schlesinger should have seen out her second-round encounter in the -63kg category at the World Championships.

GB Elite Performance coach Kate Howey has suggested that Alice Schlesinger has "a lot of work to do" ahead of next year's Olympic Games.

Schlesinger let slip a significant lead in the final minute of her second-round contest with Franssen-Gulnar Hayytbaeva at the World Championships, and although Howey praised Schlesinger's recovery from a hamstring injury, she insisted that she should have progressed.

Howey told the official British Judo website: "Today didn't go as well as expected for Alice but considering she tore her hamstring six weeks ago in Russia, she did well to be here in Astana.

"Having said that though, to be three shidos up with a minute to go, Alice should have seen the fight out and it's disappointing that she didn't win this fight. Going forward, she has a lot of work to do on her gripping and defence when she is ahead in a fight to see it out."

Earlier this summer, Schlesinger was eliminated at the last-16 stage of the European Games in Baku.
