Australia full-back Israel Folau will not be punished by Rugby Australia for anti-gay remarks he made on Instagram.

Australia full-back Israel Folau will not be punished by Rugby Australia for an anti-gay post he made on social media.

Earlier this month, the 29-year-old suggested that gay people are destined to go to hell unless they repent for their sins, attracting widespread condemnation online.

The governing body issued a statement making it clear that it does not support his views, but will take no further action after looking into the matter.

Folau attempted to explain the Instagram post, which was taken down shortly after it appeared, by putting it in context with his religious views in a Players Voice column titled 'I'm a sinner too'.

The player also offered to terminate his contract over the matter, but Rugby Australia has said that it "accepts" his position.

"Israel clearly articulated his religious beliefs and why his faith is important to him, and has provided context behind his social media comment," BBC Sport quotes chief executive Raelene Castle as saying.

"In his own words, Israel said that he did not intend to upset people intentionally or bring hurt to the game. We accept Israel's position.

"Rugby Australia will use this experience as an opportunity to remind all employees of their obligation to use social media in a respectful way."

Folau's contract expires at the end of the season.
