Queensland have drawn first blood in the opening State of Origin game by beating New South Wales 18-10.

It was New South Wales who made the first breakthrough of the match when Akuila Uate took advantage of Robbie Farah's up-and-under taking a fortunate bounce off opposing winger Darius Boyd to touch down.

The hosts were reduced to 12 men midway through the first half, however, after centre Michael Jennings was sin-binned for throwing a punch at Brent Tate.

Queensland took full advantage of the extra man as Boyd went over in the corner after 26 minutes.

The visitors then got another try on the stroke of half time as Boyd once again finished off an almost-identical move to give them an eight-point lead.

Jennings went some way to making up for his yellow card by touching down at the start of the second half, cutting the gap to just two points.

The Blues then chose to kick for goal with a penalty despite having momentum on their side, a decision they instantly regretted when Todd Carney pushed his effort wide.

Queensland went on to score the killer try with less than 10 minutes left, Greg Inglis going over for a record 13th Origin try, a feat he has achieved at the age of just 25.

The try came in controversial fashion, however, as the video referee ruled that Farah's foot had dislodged the ball out of Inglis's hand, rather than the Australia international knocking on.

The win puts Queensland just one win away from a record seventh consecutive series win.
