Warrington boss Price calls for improvements

Warrington coach Steve Price has called for improvements following his side's 23-22 loss to Catalans Dragons.

Sam Tomkins kicked a match-winning penalty from 45 metres to earn a superb victory over the Wolves, who will point to a host of errors while in possession of the ball throughout the game that ultimately proved to be costly.

"On the back of 53 per cent completion rate in the first half, I thought the boys have done really well to get back into the game in the second half and get in front. We just weren't good enough tonight," Price said.

"Catalans are tough to play at home and the crowd got behind them.

"We've got to learn from that, we've got to be better than that and we've
got to close that game out."

Catalans head coach Steve McNamara, meanwhile, hailed the win.

He said: "It was tremendous for the club. Warrington have had an unbeaten
start and have been superb in all three games and no one has got close to them.

"We had a bit of adversity ourselves, we've got a few players missing ourselves, I'm just really pleased for the group, they've trained really well and I thought we deserved the win.

"I thought everybody played well and everyone needed to play their part. We weren't happy with our performance last week, but at this early stage of the season you're trying to build some foundations so your team can be successful later in the year.

"As poor as we were last week and at Castleford to a certain extent, our ability to hang in games and defend a whole lot better than this club has done previously came through for us tonight.

"We had to scramble and fight and defend well against a very, very good team and tonight we was a little bit better with the ball so if we can keep that tenacity and keep that attitude to defend better then as the season progresses, then I'm sure you'll see us develop our attack a lot more."

McNamara reserved special praise for match winner Tomkins and half-back Matty Smith.

"We are a better team defensively than we were at this time last year, people
underestimate the value that a full back does for you in that area," McNamara added. "We got broke a few times and Sam saved us early and his communication is outstanding to the people in front of him so I'm really pleased with that and he never looked like missing that kick to be honest.

"I thought that was Matty Smith's best game for us so far. Matty sets himself high standards and has been disappointed in his performances the past few weeks.

"What people forget is that Matty has not played at the top level for the best part of a year, so he's getting back into that."
