Ben Proud has been crowned the men's 50m freestyle world champion courtesy of victory at the FINA Swimming World Championships in Abu Dhabi.

The 27-year-old qualified for the final as the third seed, but finished ahead of American Ryan Held and Canadian Joshua Liendo with a time of 20.45.

The gold is Great Britain's first medal of any colour at this year's World Championships, which began on Thursday and finish on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Dutch swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo set a new championship record en route to gold in the women's 50m butterfly final.

Hong Kong's Siobhan Haughey continued her fine championships with a bronze to add to her two golds already, finishing third in the 400m freestyle final.

Elsewhere, Italy were crowned men's 4x50m freestyle relay world champions and Israel's 18-year-old Anastasia Gorbenko won her second gold of the championships.

It was a memorable day for Russia's Kliment Kolesnikov too, as he won gold in both the men's 100m medley and 50m backstroke. body check tags ::
