Roger Federer is named sportsman of the year at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco.

Roger Federer has beaten Rafael Nadal and Cristiano Ronaldo to be named Sportsman of the Year at the Laureus World Sports Awards.

The 36-year-old recently returned to the top of the ATP world rankings, one year on from his comeback from a serious knee injury, having claimed the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles in 2017.

Federer also picked up the award for Comeback of the Year at the awards ceremony in Monaco, taking his total of Laureus Awards to a record-breaking six following his four consecutive awards for Sportsman of the Year from 2005 to 2008.

Serena Williams, who won the Australian Open in 2017, was named Sportswoman of the Year, while golfer Sergio Garcia collected the Breakthrough of the Year award and Mercedes beat Real Madrid to Team of the Year.

Chapecoense were honoured with the Best Sporting Moment for winning a title just six months after the Brazilian team were involved in a tragic airplane crash that wiped out almost all of their first team and coaching staff.
