Andy Murray: 'Rafael Nadal exit is irrelevant'

Andy Murray insists that Rafael Nadal's first-round elimination from Wimbledon at the hands of Steve Darcis is "irrelevant" at this stage of the competition.

Andy Murray has insisted that his Wimbledon chances remain the same following the shock first-round exit of two-time winner Rafael Nadal.

The British number two seed overcame Benjamin Becker in straight sets on the opening day of the SW19 Grand Slam, just hours after Nadal was beaten by world number 135 Steve Darcis.

Nadal's elimination means that Murray no longer has the daunting prospect of a semi-final meeting with the 2008 and 2010 champion, but the Scot has stressed that he will not change his approach to the competition.

"It's pretty irrelevant right now, but it's obviously surprising," Murray told reporters. "I didn't see any of the match, obviously, because I was playing. But, yeah, it's a surprising loss.

"But the consistency that Rafa, Roger and Novak have shown in the slams over the last five or six years, it's going to be almost impossible to keep that up forever.

"I'm not here to worry about all of the other players just now. I have to focus on myself, my matches, try to take care of them one at a time."

Murray will face Lu Yen-Hsun, the conqueror of Briton Jamie Ward, in the second round.
