Tony Gonzalez: 'Two NFL teams tried to sign me this year'

Former NFL tight end Tony Gonzalez says that a pair of teams tried to tempt him out of retirement, despite already taking up a role with the media.

Future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez has admitted that two teams tried to tempt him out of retirement during the course of the recently ended regular campaign.

The 38-year-old ex-Kansas City Chief and Atlanta Falcon called time on his career in December 2013, and quickly settled into a studio analyst TV job in time for the 2014 season.

His move to the screen did not stop teams from trying to get him back onto the field, but Gonzalez himself admitted that he is now not in the right shape to be able to play properly.

He told the Kansas City Star: "If there was a team out there in need of a tight end, they better go somewhere else because I'm about 230 pounds now!

"I'm afraid I'd get crushed out there on the football field. I enjoyed 17 years, had a great time, but I'm very happy where I'm at right now.

"I'd only return if a Super Bowl team asked if I could be like the third-string tight end, but I don't have to get in the game, and I can get a ring. Then I'd say yes."

Gonzalez walked away from the sport having not won a Super Bowl ring, but he holds legendary status having broken NFL records for touchdown receptions (111) and total reception yards (15,127) by a player in his position.
