Carolina Panthers star Cam Newton has stated that he will be 100% ready to start the team's first game of the season.
Newton suffered broken ribs during a pre-season clash with the New England Patriots last Friday, meaning that he will miss the Panthers' final warm-up game on Thursday.
However, the quarterback has suggested that the injury is not too severe, and that he will be fit enough to lead the team once the campaign is underway.
He told reporters: "There's been no setback at all. I'm excited about the opportunity and each day brings more confidence that I am close to 100%.
"My body feels better as it was obvious my ribs were hurting, but I'm moving forward trying to stay positive and optimistic about this whole process.
"I have no doubt in my mind that I'll be starting in week one."
Carolina selected Newton with first overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft, with the 25-year-old not having missed a regular-season game since.
