Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera has revealed that the team does not know whether Cam Newton will make an appearance against the Buffalo Bills on Friday.
The Panthers will meet the Bills in both sides' first pre-season encounter, with the quarterback making steady progress in training as he looks to recover from injury.
"We don't know the plan yet for Cam for Friday," said Rivera on the team's official website.
"It's all based on what RV and the doctors think and how Cam feels.
"Once we get past Thursday morning, we'll find out how he is after the practice and we'll sit down and talk and make a decision on what we want to do, in as far as he's concerned, in terms of playing time."
The new NFL season gets underway on September 4.
