Mike Pettine: 'Quarterback not priority for Cleveland Browns'

Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine insists that the team did not want to "over-prioritise" the quarterback position during this year's Draft.

Mike Pettine has said that the Cleveland Browns did not "over-prioritise" the quarterback position during this year's NFL Draft.

Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel both started games for the AFC North side last season, but the latter has spent much of the off-season in a rehab facility, while Hoyer has moved to the Houston Texans.

The head coach told Cleveland.com: "I don't think we can emphasise it enough that we're going to build a football team. We're not going to over-prioritise the quarterback position.

"I know there was a lot of speculation even during the draft we were looking to move up, even a report we were looking to move up today. To me, it was all about having a gameplan and sticking to it as was evidenced by the picks we ended up with.

"We go 11 against 11, we're not just trotting quarterbacks out on the 50-yard line and thumb wrestling. To me there are a lot of different ways to win football games. You just don't force the situation. If we perceive our quarterback group is not the best in the division, what does that mean? Do we call the league and cancel games? You still gotta play."

Manziel is currently joined by quarterbacks Josh McCown, Thad Lewis and Connor Shaw on the Browns' roster.
