The New Orleans Saints have announced they have placed linebacker Jonathan Vilma on their injured reserve - designated to return list.
Vilma underwent surgery on his knee during pre-season, but details about the operation were not released by the team.
As a result of being placed on the list, Vilma will be unable to participate in the Saints' games until week eight and will not be allowed to practise until week six, should the team activate him to their roster.
New Orleans are already without defensive starters Will Smith, Kenyon Coleman and Victor Butler.
