New York Jets general manager John Idzik says that the team could not match cornerback Darrelle Revis's valuation of himself.

John Idzik has said that the New York Jets did not agree with Darrelle Revis's valuation of himself.

With just one year left on the cornerback's contract, the Jets agreed to trade the 27-year-old to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for their first-round pick in this year's draft.

The team's general manager told reporters: "It became quite evident to us that there was a substantial difference between Darrelle's view of his value and ours. So we felt like there would have to be a significant change on either side in order to create a path toward reaching an agreeable deal for the long term.

"Once we reached a point with Tampa and they presented an offer that we felt merited serious consideration, we discussed it at length internally, and we really ultimately came to the conclusion that this was the best thing to do for the Jets at this time.

"So I'd like to say that the New York Jets are extremely grateful to have had Darrelle on our roster for six very memorable years. He gave us everything he had. He performed at an extremely high level. He was a great leader in our locker room. He's a great guy in the community."

Revis, who is recovering from a knee ligament injury, has signed a six-year deal with the Buccaneers worth up to $96m (£63m).
