Marty Mornhinweg: 'Quarterback competition will work beautifully'

New York Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg believes that the quarterback competition between Geno Smith and Michael Vick will "work beautifully".

New York Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg has expressed his belief that the quarterback competition at the team will "work beautifully".

Incumbent starter Geno Smith faces competition from veteran Michael Vick this off-season in a situation similar to last year, when rookie Smith was battling it out with Mark Sanchez.

Smith won that competition when Sanchez suffered a season-ending shoulder injury, and while Mornhinweg refused to elaborate on who would be starter this season, he stressed that the number one priority for the team was to help Smith progress.

"I think this thing will work beautifully. I expect Geno to progress at a high rate with Mike's help. It's just that simple," Mornhinweg told reporters.

"We're going to structure it a certain way. One thing I want to make sure of is that nothing impedes the young quarterback's progression. I'm talking about Geno.

"He progressed beautifully, and I'm talking the last quarter of the season. He played at a high level. We brought Mike in to compete, to push Geno and to make Geno the very best he can be."

Smith finished his rookie campaign last year with 3,046 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
