NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reveals that there are benefits to expanding the playoffs to 14 teams and admits that the league are considering the move.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has revealed that he sees a lot of benefits in expanding the playoffs from 12 teams to 14.

The current system in the post-season sees the best six teams from the NFC and AFC compete in three rounds of elimination fixtures in their respective conferences to decide the two teams that will contest the Super Bowl.

Goodell said in his State of the League press conference: "There's a lot of benefits to doing that. We think we can make the league more competitive. We think we can make the matchups more competitive towards the end of the season. There will be more excitement, more memorable moments for our fans.

"That's something that attracts us. We think we can do it properly from a competitive standpoint. This will continue to get very serious consideration by the Competition Committee and then the ownership will have to vote on it."

A change in the system means that 14 out of the 32 teams in the NFL would be playing playoff football in January.
