The Patriots sit on top of the AFC East following a 38-31 victory.

The New England Patriots held on for a battling 38-31 win over the Chicago Bears in Sunday’s NFL action.

A topsy-turvy affair marked by mistakes from both teams came down to the final drive, but Mitchell Trubisky’s hail mary at the end was caught by Kevin White one yard short of the end zone as the Patriots hung on.

Chicago had held a 17-7 lead early in the second quarter, having gone 10-7 up with a remarkable touchdown from Trubisky.

Officially in the books as an eight-yard rush, NFL Stats said the quarterback actually covered just shy of 72 yards as he dropped back, scrambled and circled round before finding a path to the end zone.

Still, the Bears could not stop the Patriots moving to 5-2 as they sit top of the AFC East.

The Houston Texans took control of the AFC South with a 20-7 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, who wound up benching quarterback Blake Bortles following two fumbles.

The first led to one of two early field goals for Houston, and the second was soon followed by a one-yard touchdown pass from Deshaun Watson to DeAndre Hopkins that put Houston 20-0 up.

Cody Kessler found TJ Yeldon for a touchdown late in the third quarter to get Jacksonville on the board.

But the win puts Houston clear at the top of the AFC South with the Tennessee Titans having lost a heartbreaker, 20-19, to the Los Angeles Chargers in London.

The Titans had been on the back foot ever since Philip Rivers hit Ty Williams with a 75-yard touchdown pass on Los Angeles’ first offensive play of the game.

But Tennessee rallied in the fourth quarter and Marcus Mariota’s touchdown inside the final minute looked like sending the game to overtime.

Instead coach Mike Vrabel called for a two-point conversion and Andre Phillips batted away Mariota’s pass attempt to give Los Angeles victory.

The defending Super Bowl champions slipped to a fourth defeat of the season as the Carolina Panthers rallied to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 21-17.

Cam Newton threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Greg Olsen with 82 seconds left as Carolina came from 17-0 down for the biggest comeback victory in franchise history.

Kerryon Johnson piled up 158 yards as the focal point of a powerful Detroit Lions offence in a 32-21 victory over the Miami Dolphins.

The Lions piled up 457 total yards, 248 of them on the ground as they improved to 3-3.

The struggling Indianapolis Colts took out their frustrations in a 37-5 rout of the Buffalo Bills as Andrew Luck threw four touchdown passes and Marlon Mack ran in his first rushing score of the season.

The Minnesota Vikings picked off New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold three times on their
way to a 37-17 win, while Chandler Catanzaro booted a 59-yard field goal in overtime to give the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a 26-23 win over the Cleveland Browns.
