Dick Lebeau announces his decision to resign from his post as defensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers after 11 seasons with the club.

Dick Lebeau has confirmed that he has resigned from his position as defensive coordinator with the Pittsburgh Steelers after 11 seasons in the role.

The 77-year-old rejoined the club as their defensive coordinator in the 2004 season, having previously been with the team between 1992 and 1996.

Lebeau's defenses were pivotal in guiding the Steelers to Super Bowl triumphs in the 2005 and 2008 seasons, but his side began to struggle in recent seasons, culminating in his decision to leave the club.

"I'm resigning this position, not retiring," LeBeau told the Urbana Daily Citizen. "I had a great run in Pittsburgh.

"I'm grateful for all the things that have happened to me and thankful for all the support I had in Pittsburgh. It was a lot of fun. It's just time to take a break."

Head coach Mike Tomlin added: "We want to thank Dick for his many years of service with the team and all that he has done for this organisation.

"His coaching helped lead us to many successful seasons and championships. We are very appreciative of his efforts, and we wish him well."

The Steelers are expected to promote linebackers coach Keith Butler to become their new defensive coordinator.
