San Diego Chargers offensive lineman Nick Hardwick has announced his retirement from the NFL.
The 33-year-old spent 11 seasons with the club after being selected in the third round of the 2004 Draft, immediately becoming an integral part of the team.
Hardwick confirmed that the 2014 campaign would be his last in the league, but it was cut short to just one game after he sustained an injury in the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals.
He wrote in a letter to the club's supporters: "For 11 years of unconditional and unwavering love and support to me, my wife, Jayme, and our sons, Hudson and Teddy; I thank you dearly.
"You took me in immediately as one of your family members and allowed me to grow up both personally and professionally in front of you. There are so many memories that we've shared together that have brought us closer together. Devastating losses and improbable triumphs alike have forged the bond we now share.
"I vow to support the San Diego Chargers unconditionally until the day I pass. I compel you, Chargers blood, to join me with the steely resolve that will be required from this city to ensure that we can accomplish what every one of us wants and deserves to accomplish; a Super Bowl Championship, right here, in America's Finest City, San Diego."
Hardwick was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2006 and was also named in the Chargers' 50th anniversary team.
