Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden announces that Kirk Cousins will be the club's starting quarterback for the 2015 campaign.

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden has confirmed that Kirk Cousins will be his side's starting quarterback for the 2015 season ahead of Robert Griffin III.

Both quarterbacks were selected in the 2012 Draft, but as Griffin was picked second overall he became the starter and performed at a high level in his first season in the NFL, winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

However, Griffin sustained a devastating knee injury in the 2012 playoffs and has struggled to find his form since. The duo have battled over the course of the summer to win the starting berth, but Gruden has opted to go with Cousins due to his performances in pre-season.

Gruden told reporters: "When it's all said and done, after all the film we've gone through, after all the off-season activity, all the training camp footage, we feel like at this time, Kirk Cousins gives us the best chance to win and that's where we're going. It's Kirk's team.

"Kirk has done an outstanding job. Robert has done some great things no question, we have total faith in all three of them.

"But moving forward, with all the things we've studied over the course of training camp and OTAs, we just feel like Kirk has earned the right to be the starting quarterback for 2015."

The Redskins open the 2015 season against the Miami Dolphins on September 13.
