England's Dina Asher-Smith has announced that she will not be able to compete in this year's Commonwealth Games due to a hamstring injury.

The two-time Olympic medallist sustained the issue during the women's 4x100m relay at the recent World Athletics Championships in Eugene, as Great Britain missed out on a medal.

Asher-Smith had previously placed fourth in the 100m and clinched the bronze medal in the 200m in Oregon, but the 26-year-old will not be competing in front of the home crowds later this month.

Confirming her withdrawal on social media, Asher-Smith described the injury as a "light hamstring strain" but the rapid turnaround time between the two tournaments hindered her chances of competing at the Commonwealths.

"So I promised an update and here it is!⁣ Thankfully I've only got a light hamstring strain after pulling up in the 4x1 a few days ago! No major issues and nothing to worry about 🙏🏾 ," Asher-Smith wrote.

"I feel good but I'm in need of a few days off. ⁣But due to the short turn around between the end of Worlds and the start of the Commonwealth Games in a few days time I'm going to have to withdraw 😔⁣

"I was so excited to race in front of a home crowd and all the British fans 😓 it's going to be such an amazing competition and I know that Team England will do you all proud. ⁣I'm looking forward to representing you all throughout the rest of the summer 🇬🇧 and wishing the best of luck to all of my teammates."

Asher-Smith - who was also hampered by a hamstring issue before the Tokyo 2020 Olympics - took 4x100m relay gold and 200m bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. body check tags ::
