Confusion in women's high jump

Confusion surrounds the qualifying campaign of the women's high jump at the London Olympics.

There has been an atmosphere of uncertainty during the qualification process of the women's high jump at the London Olympic this morning.

A total of 14 women, including Germany's Ariane Friedrich, had cleared the bar at 1.93m.

As a result, the group, which was led by Friedrich, opened up discussions with officials over all of them advancing through to Saturday's final, despite rules that only 12 can progress.

Those talks appeared to fall through though and because she had committed more fouls than the majority of the field in the previous round, Friedrich was then forced to attempt 1.96m, which she failed on three occasions. That means that the 28-year-old will play no further part in the competition.

The 12 that have qualified are: Svetlana Radzivil, Ruth Beitia, Anna Chicherova, Emma Green Tregaro, Melanie Melfort, Burcu Ayhan, Brigetta Barrett, Airine Palsyte, Tia Hellebaut, Chaunte Lowe, Svetlana Shkolina and Irina Gordeeva.
