Commonwealth organisers: 'John Barrowman gay kiss was scripted'

Organisers of the Commonwealth Games reveal that John Barrowman's gay kiss during the opening ceremony was part of the script.

The organisers of the Commonwealth Games have revealed that John Barrowman's on-screen kiss during last night's opening ceremony was pre-planned.

The entertainer grabbed a male dancer for a kiss after referencing Gretna Green - a popular place for runaway weddings - during a musical number paying homage to various towns and cities across Scotland. His kiss has received widespread praise from the LGBT community as homosexuality remains illegal in 42 countries of the Commonwealth.

David Grevemberg, CEO of the Games, told reporters this morning: "[It was] a bit of Scottish welcoming flair to showcase a speed-date of Scotland very quickly. We thought that this was something that accentuated the values of Scotland and the diversity of Scotland. It's something we felt strongly about in showcasing everything that's on offer.

"What we're committed to as an organisation, we haven't compromised yet, in terms of being - some people may say bold - but confident in our approach and in keeping with the values of the Commonwealth Games Federation."

Meanwhile, Barrowman has responded to critics of his performance on Twitter, saying: "I'm Scottish and u can never take that away no matter what your politics are. Bitterness makes u ugly and old very fast :)"
