Nigel Walker is appointed to the Commonwealth Games England board with immediate effect.

Former international athlete Nigel Walker has been appointed to the Commonwealth Games England board with immediate effect.

The 51-year-old will oversee the sports science and medical services to Team England athletes, while also advising the board on all performance issues as part of his role.

Walker takes up the position four months on from England's most successful ever Commonwealth Games performance, where they topped the medals table in Glasgow with a total of 174 gold, silver and bronze triumphs combined.

"The entire England team performed with distinction in Glasgow in a truly memorable Commonwealth Games and I am delighted to be given the opportunity to use my experience to help the Commonwealth Games England board build and implement plans which will support England's athletes as they aim for the Gold Coast in 2018," Walker said in a short statement.

Outgoing CGE Chair Sir Andrew Foster added: "Nigel's appointment adds depth to an already very strong board giving Team England the very best chance of success going forward. To be leaving Team England in such capable hands is very satisfying."

Ian Metcalfe will take up his role as new CGE chairman later this week.
