Eilish McColgan has claimed gold for Scotland in a thrilling women's 10,000m final at the Commonwealth Games.

The 31-year-old went into the race favoured to win the first major crown of her career, 36 years on from her mother Liz McColgan claiming the same title in Edinburgh.

For a large portion of the race in Birmingham, McColgan was alongside Kenyan duo Irene Cheptai and Sheila Kiprotich, her rivals seemingly having the momentum.

However, Kiprotich appeared to be pick up an injury several laps from the finish, setting up a head-to-head showdown between McColgan and Cheptai.

The Kenyan athlete had the better of the penultimate lap and seemed ready to pull a couple of metres clear of McColgan as she battled valiantly to keep on her shoulder.

As the pair came around the final bend, however, McColgan seized her moment, kicking hard to move level with Cheptai before surging clear to win in a Games record of 30:48.60.

Cheptai was less than a second adrift of the gold-medal winner, while Kiprotich managed to secured a brave bronze, finishing 21 seconds adrift of McColgan but five seconds ahead of Uganda's Stella Chesang.

Jessica Judd was in fifth for England, narrowly ahead of compatriot Samantha Harrison who came home in sixth spot. body check tags ::
