Darren Campbell has expressed his belief that Sebastian Coe should light the Olympic flame during Friday's opening ceremony.
The person on whom the prestigious honour has been bestowed has yet to be revealed, with legendary Olympians Daley Thompson and Sir Steve Redgrave among the leading candidates, alongside David Beckham.
However, Campbell believes that Coe, who played a major role in bringing the Games to London and is a legendary Olympian in his own right, deserves the accolade.
"If we're talking about greatness then, for me, it should be Lord Coe," he said. "Not only was he extremely successful at the Olympic Games but also he's brought this great event we're going to witness over the next couple of weeks here.
"Obviously he's not going to put his own name forward and I appreciate how fantastic Sir Steve Redgrave was and the achievements of Daley Thopson - who was my hero - but Lord Coe will forever be known for bringing the Olympics here.
"It was his vision and what an honour it would be for him - and what a way to say 'thank you' to him - by allowing him to light the torch."
Coe is a two-time Olympic gold medallist, winning the 1500m in 1980 and 1984.
