Sebastian Coe hails Team GB's medal-laden day yesterday as the greatest day of sport that he has ever seen.

Lord Sebastian Coe has hailed yesterday as the "greatest day" of sport that he has ever seen.

Team GB enjoyed their most successful day at an Olympic Games for over a century as they won six gold medals and a silver, including a trio of golds in athletics.

Now, Coe believes that Britain's golden night has overtaken Sydney's 'Magic Monday' - the night Cathy Freeman won gold for Australia - as the best sporting spectacle he has witnessed.

"It was the greatest day of sport I have ever witnessed. I dreamt that we would have a night like that but not in my wildest dreams did I think that it would actually unfold in the way that it did," said Lord Coe.

"Up until last night I would have never have questioned that the greatest night was 'Magic Monday' in Sydney, the Cathy Freeman night. That night in Sydney was Haile Gebrselassie going toe to toe with [Paul] Tergat, Michael Johnson, Jonathan Edwards... that was an extraordinary night, and this did edge ahead of it.

"Particularly if you put it into the context of what else was going on in the Games from the earliest moments of rowing right the way through to the velodrome. There was a narrative yesterday of infectious success and it is a day none of us will ever forget."

Britain currently sit third in the medal table and are enjoying their most successful Games for over 100 years.
