Competing in her first ever Games, Weightman headed down the home straight in seventh position.
However, she passed Kenya's Faith Chepngetich Kipyegon with 20m remaining to claim the final qualifying spot.
Weightman is coached by former British distance runner Steve Cram.
Gamze Bulut won the race in a time of 4:06.69, while Morgan Uceny, Natallia Kareiva, Ekaterina Kotstetskaya and Mimi Belete also advanced through.
