Richard Whitehead takes gold for Britain in the T42 200m, smashing his own world record.

British sprinter Richard Whitehead has won the T42 200m in a new world record.

Whitehead, who uses the straight-leg prosthetic limbs, took a while to get going but came storming through in the home straight to take gold.

The 36-year-old took half a second off his own world record, running 24.38s.

"It is all about my team. I have great support around me," he told Channel 4 after the race.

"I know the guys trained well for 150m and I knew I had the endurance from the marathon.

"I came, I saw, I conquered. I've come through harder things that this and I dedicate it to my parents and my fiancee."

Shaquille Vance of America came second in 25.55s, with Germany's Heinrich Popow taking bronze in a time of 25.90s.

Whitehead had wanted to run in the marathon, but was not allowed to compete against athlete with arm amputations, so took to sprinting.

He will also be competing in the 100m, which begins later today.
