Great Britain's Josh Kerr has produced the performance of his life to win the men's 1500m at the World Athletics Championships.

The 25-year-old earned a surprise bronze at the Tokyo Olympics and finished in fifth place when compatriot Jake Wightman overcome the challenge of Jakob Ingebrigtsen at the Worlds in Eugene last year.

On that occasion, Ingebrigtsen could not cope with Wightman during the closing 200 metres, and lightning struck twice as Kerr stormed to victory in Budapest.

Kerr timed his burst to perfection, taking on the challenge of outlasting his Norwegian down the back straight before pulling clear in the final 100 metres.

Ingebrigtsen was powerless to stop Kerr winning in a time of 3:29.38 - a season's best - with the pre-race favourite finishing in 3:29.65.

Bronze went to Ingebrigtsen's compatriot Narve Gilje Nordas, who missed out on a silver medal by just three hundredths of a second.

Fellow British athlete Neil Gourley had to settle for a ninth-placed finish as a famous night in Hungary belonged to Kerr.

In the women's 400m, Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic produced a stunning display to win in a time of 48.76 seconds, a national record and 0.81 seconds ahead of the rest of the field to back up the silvers that she earned in Tokyo and Eugene.

Norway's Karsten Warholm continued his dominance of the men's 400m by winning a third world title, posting a time of 46.89 seconds.
