Adam Gemili admits that he will not risk his place at the Olympic Games next year by running at the upcoming World Athletics Championships.

British 100m sprinter Adam Gemili has admitted that he does not know if he will be fit enough to race at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing.

The 21-year-old suffered a hamstring injury in the process of breaking the 10-second barrier for the first time in his career at the Diamond League meeting in Birmingham earlier this month.

There had been suggestions that Gemili would recover in time for the event in Beijing in August, but with the Olympic Games on the horizon, the Blackheath & Bromley Harriers athlete has insisted that he will not do anything that could jeopardise his place in Rio de Janeiro.

"I'm slowly but surely recovering. I've got a good bunch of guys working on me. I'm not trying to rush things, but if I can get back on the track before the end of the season that is great," he told British Athletics.

"Of course it would be great if I was able to make Beijing, but I do not know if that will be possible yet and I am not going to risk anything. We have to look at the bigger picture, with the Rio Olympics obviously the main priority."

At London 2012, Gemili reached the semi-finals of the 100m.
