Golden State Warriors considering name change

Golden State Warriors CEO and president Rick Welts says that the team want to hear from fans over plans to change the team's name back to the San Francisco Warriors.

The Golden State Warriors have asked for feedback from their fans on plans to change the team's name.

The franchise, who were previously known as the San Francisco Warriors before their move to Oakland in 1971, announced earlier this week that they had purchased a 12-acre site in San Francisco, and plan to move back to the city ahead of the 2018-19 NBA season.

President and CEO Rick Welts told ESPN: "We're very curious what our fans think of that. I couldn't imagine making that decision in the very near future, but we definitely want to see what our fans prefer.

"We're spending a lot of time with the facility itself to do everything possible to replicate what we think is a really special atmosphere for our games at Oracle.

"Oracle Arena is the oldest arena in the NBA, and it's served great for 50 years. But there comes a point in time where if we're going to be the franchise that we aspire to be, we're going to need a new playing facility. And in our view, San Francisco is the right place to be if you have the same aspirations we have, to be truly one of the great franchises in sports."

The team was originally named the Philadelphia Warriors before moving from the East Coast to San Francisco in 1962.
