The Los Angeles Lakers have announced that head coach Frank Vogel has been relieved of his duties after a disappointing 2021-22 campaign.
The Lakers missed out on a playoff berth after mustering an 11th-placed finish in the Western Conference, winning 33 and losing 49 of their regular-season matches.
Vogel led the Los Angeles franchise to the NBA Championship in 2020, but the Lakers have now taken what they feel is a "necessary" decision after Sunday's win over the Denver Nuggets.
"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Frank both on and off the court. Frank is a great coach and a good man," Lakers Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka said in a statement.
"We will forever be grateful to him for his work in guiding us to the 2019-20 NBA championship. This is an incredibly difficult decision to make, but one we feel is necessary at this point. All of us here wish Frank and his wonderful family all the best for the future."
Vogel departs the Lakers with a 127-98 record under his belt from three seasons in charge, with his side falling in the first round of the playoffs to the Phoenix Suns in 2021. body check tags ::
