Team England boxer Sam Maxwell says that he was "really happy" with his performance in his first bout at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Team England boxer Sam Maxwell has revealed his delight after advancing into the next round of the light welterweight division at the Commonwealth Games.

Maxwell was in imperious form in Glasgow - forcing a stoppage in the second round against Ikani Falekaono, who struggled to match the intensity of the Englishman.

"I am really happy with my performance. I stuck to my tactics and didn't get too carried away and once I felt like I could step it up and finish it I did that," he told Sports Mole.

"I just felt relaxed in there and confident. I never let the occasion get to me. This is the biggest crowd I have ever boxed in front of and the cheers were unreal. I just loved it."

Maxwell also said that it was important for Team England to return to winning ways following Pat McCormack's elimination earlier this afternoon.

"Definitely yeah. I watched that back at the flat and I thought that he boxed really well. It's England and we want to win. We are back on track now. We've got one more later – Anthony Fowler – and I am sure he will do the business as well."

Maxwell will fight again tomorrow against Kenyan Denis Okoth.
