AIBA punish two referees

The Amateur International Boxing Association issues punishments to the two referees at the centre of last night's Olympic boxing controversy.

The Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) have confirmed that the two referees at the centre of last night's controversy have both received punishment.

Ishanguly Meretnyyazov, from Turkmenistan, has been expelled after failing to issue "at least three counts" to Azeri bantamweight Magomed Abdulhamidov during the final round of his bout against Japan's Satoshi Shimizu.

The AIBA confirmed this morning that Shimizu's decision has been overturned and he will now compete in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Frank Scharmach of Germany has been suspended for five days after he disqualified Iran's Ali Mezaheri in the second round of his heavyweight scrap against Cuba's Jose Larduet for persistent holding.

Wu Ching-Kuo, president of the AIBA, said that the governing body is determined to get to the bottom of the two issues amid accusations of fight fixing.

"I deeply regret that we had to take these decisions," said Wu. "However, our main concern has been and will always be the protection of the integrity and fair-play of our competitions.

"I will take all possible steps to reinforce this. There is only one truth and we always get to the truth."

Mazaheri refused to stand next to Scharmach when Larduet's hand was raised as the winner.
