Terry Flanagan targeting unification clash in 2016

WBO lightweight champion Terry Flanagan says that he wants to secure a unification clash in 2016 should he defeat Derry Mathews in February.

British lightweight Terry Flanagan has indicated that he would like a unification clash with either Jorge Linares or Anthony Crolla if he can defeat Derry Mathews in February.

In October, Flanagan produced a devastating display to beat Diego Magdaleno inside two rounds in his first defence of the WBO title that he claimed in the summer.

Flanagan will be involved in a domestic clash with Mathews in Liverpool at the start of 2016, but while not looking past his British rival, the Mancunian has admitted that he has his eyes on unifying the division.

The 26-year-old is quoted by World Boxing News as saying: "I'm in boxing to prove that I'm the best and I'll fight the best, Mathews is slowing me down, I'll beat him in Liverpool and then move on to the big unifiers in 2016.

"Linares is calling me out and then there's Crolla who Frank Warren has offered half a million pounds to fight the winner out of me and Mathews, which will be me and that would be a cracking derby.

"It's hard not to be distracted but it's all just talk at the end of the day, the cold reality is if I lose then it's all off the table so right now I'm just concentrating on what I've got to do and that's to smash up Mathews."

Flanagan is yet to lose as a professional, winning 29 bouts in a row.
