Amir Khan wants to fight Floyd Mayweather "next summer" but doesn't think the American wants to fight him.

British boxer Amir Khan has targeted a fight against American great Floyd Mayweather "next summer".

However, the 24-year-old does not believe that Mayweather will want to take the bout on.

"Maybe next summer the fight against Floyd Mayweather could happen," said Bolton-born Khan, who currently holds the WBA and IBF light-welterweight belts.

"It is about experience and timing and I think it is my time now."

He has stated that he will fight once more at his current weight division before moving up to welterweight where the likes of Mayweather and Filipino Manny Pacquiao compete.

"We want to jump there because we have cleaned up the 140lb division," Khan added. "We want to jump in there with the best and beat the best."

The boxing world has been calling for a super-fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao but it has yet to materialise and Khan has said that he is willing to take on the world's best.

"If the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight doesn't happen I am happy to step in there - but that is if Floyd will take the fight.

"At the moment he is saying he doesn't want to fight me."

After beating Zab Judah in a unification bout in July, Khan is still waiting to learn his opponent for what would be his final light-welterweight title defence in December.
