Mancunian fighter John Murray was stopped in the 11th round of his world title fight against Brandon Rios in New York.
The American retains his WBA lightweight title because of the technical knockout.
Murray travelled to Madison Square Garden in a confident mood and started the fight well, matching his opponent in the opening rounds.
Rios started to impose himself in the second half of the bout before forcing the referee to put an end to the fight in the penultimate round after some constant, bruising blows to the head.
The defeat is 26-year-old Murray's second in succession after he lost to Kevin Mitchell in July.
