Amir Khan warns Scotland's boxers of the dangers of turning professional too early, claiming that they should first compete in the Rio Olympics in 2016.

British welterweight Amir Khan has advised Scotland's Commonwealth Games boxers to shelve their ambition to turn professional until after the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Reece McFadden, Charlie Flynn, Josh Taylor and Glasgow heavyweight Stephen Lavelle have all impressed for the host nation en route to a semi-final place at the SECC this afternoon.

However, rather than dreaming of professional status, Khan, who built his career on the foundations of a silver medal in Athens in 2004, says that the quartet should use the next Olympic Games to further hone their skills.

He told STV: "My advice would be maximise their experience here and If I was them I would probably stay amateur for two more years until the Olympic Games because you have the Olympics round the corner.

"The Olympics is the biggest tournament in the world. Don't get me wrong the Commonwealth Games are huge as well but you've not got every country in the world in the tournament.

"The Olympics just has that something special about it and to fight in the Olympics and just be part of it is huge. So I think they should definitely wait another two years, it's not too long. It's only going to give them more experience and make them a better fighter."

The first Scottish semi-final gets underway at approximately 1.15pm, with McFadden taking on Australia's Andrew Moloney.
